On Character

author
Stanley A McChrystal

A fascinating memoir on living: leadership, showing up, and choosing to engage. There's a lot of valuable advice in the book and at the same time I enjoy about how open the author is -- I've been highlighting a lot of interesting quotes.

Surprisingly enough, "character" is something I'd never explicitly considered as a separate entity to define a person. It was just who I am, and who people are.

Life, I've learned, is mostly about who we decide to be. The sum of your thoughts, feelings, and actions over time. For trust to work at an organizational level, it must be woven throughout the very fabric of the organization.

Opportunity is the gift of choice and the responsibility of agency.

As in almost everything I read, I'm reminded of books by Terry Pratchett -- particularly Monstrous Regiment and Small Gods.
