This was a good book to help me reason more clearly about emotions; particularly about thinking about executive control network and the emotional salience network that are both signals but can also be maintained by the executive control. I also liked taking the tests for the emotional profile. Apparently, I'm average on love, lo on happiness, anger, argumentativeness and high on anxiety, shame and guilt.
- An emotion is a functional state of mind that puts your brain in a particular mode of operation that adjusts your goals, directs your attention.
- Happiness encourges pushing limits, taking more risks; longer life
- Determination is also an emotion; can actually be influenced by electrodes
- Improving happiness
- time to family & friends
- express gratitude
- be kind
- cultivate optimism for the future
- live in the present
- exercise daily
- commit to lifelong goals
- the executive network exert influence on the emotional salience network
- "affect labeling" talking or writing about your feelings
- writing/talking about emotions gives relief
- emotion allows us to have flexible responses
